Last month's unemployment rate was 7.8%, down from 8.1% in August. It marked the first time the rate fell below 8% since Obama took office. Also in September, 114,000 jobs were added, up from 96,000 in August.

Obama took a swipe at Romney's tax returns. According to documents Romney released in September, the Republican candidate made $13.7 million last year and paid $1.94 million in federal income taxes, giving him an effective tax rate of 14.1%. Obama's campaign has repeatedly criticized Romney for not releasing more than his 2010 and 2011 returns.
